Winter Service Tips

Cold weather can wreak havoc on your car in more ways than one. To keep your vehicle in prime condition during the cold winter months, Pfeiffer Used has put together a list of winter car care tips. From maintaining the electrical system to other minor maintenance, you’d be surprised at what makes a big difference come time for winter.

Maintain your battery. Your electrical system especially takes a hit in cold weather, one of the main reasons it’s so important to keep your battery in good shape. Cold temperatures reduce cranking power, sometimes as much as half. If your battery is more than five years old, consider replacing it. You should also check for corrosion on battery terminals.

Replace your wiper blades. You should replace wiper blades at least once a year, though some lose effectiveness as early as six months. Wipers are important during the winter season, so it’s a good idea to replace them.

Check your oil. You should usually change your oil before the winter time, as cold weather takes a toll on your engine. Consider choosing oil with less viscosity during the wintertime. For example, if you normally opt for 10W-30, try 5W-30 instead.

Get new tires if you need them. Although all-season tires will be adequate, you should seriously consider buying winter tires. These add traction, divert water, and hold their form better in cold weather.
